A PARKING SKETCHBOOK

The article describes the new parking lot concept and design - the parking lot as arrival point. Landscape architects are now thinking about designing parking lots in the same way they would design a plaza or other open space. Innovative parking lots are described in this article. It is noted that West Coast planners are more aware of the environmental impact of surface parking lots. A growing number of such lots are well-screened from public view and blend into their surroundings: garden rooms with trees in them. It is pointed out that both standards for parking spaces and the materials used to build the lots are coming under scrutiny. It is suggested that asphalt be employed only for the areas that get the most use, brick paver for the next busiest area, and grass for the seldom-used spaces. It is also described how environmentally sound solutions that reuse runoff are being used in a parking lot at the University of Monterrey, Mexico.
