ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS: GETTING MORE FOR LESS

A study commissioned in Hawthorne, New Jersey, offers insights into the alleviation traffic congestion, and getting 'more road for money'. Among the general strategies recommended were the following: reconfiguring road markings can alleviate traffic problems; making narrow, 2-way streets into one-way thoroughfares; using under-used land for parking or other uses; relocating and/or clarifying signage; and analyzing inexpensive alternatives as well as significant measures. Key trouble spots in Hawthorne showed a history of frequent accidents, inadequate parking, and traffic bottlenecks. Recommendations for these locations are described, including the use of less costly measures, as well as more costly measures. It is noted that sometimes problems arise when road conditions do not accurately take ino account the motorist's point of view.
