AN INTRODUCTION TO IR SPECTROSCOPY FOR GEOSYNTHETIC APPLICATIONS

A general discussion is presented of the theory, methods and applications for IR (infrared spectroscopy) in geosynthetics. The two kinds of IR instruments commercially available are described, as well as experimental modes and applications. IR spectroscopy is useful to identify unknown materials and has a limited ability to monitor polymer degradation. When appropriate test procedures are used, IR spectroscopy will be effective in providing a cost efficient, powerful tool to fingerprint product parameters and to evaluate equivalency in product supplies.
