THE ONLINE INDUSTRY AND TELEPHONE DEREGULATION IN THE U.S.: AN OVERVIEW

This article is based on material presented at the 1988 Biennial Conference of the 1989 National Regulatory Research Institute (NRRI), the 1989 National Online Meeting, and the 1990 National Online Meeting. The American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) divestiture and the resulting changes in telephone company regulation in the U.S. have allowed telephone companies to diversify into nonregulated businesses including the online information services industry. How and when U.S. telephone companies enter potential information markets is determined in large part by the changes in regulation that have occurred and will occur over the next few years.
