SAN DIEGO TROLLEY: 10 YEARS OLD AND GROWING
From 15-mile, single track system, San Diego now is 35 route miless with a 17 million annual ridership. The article discusses the history of the system, back to the enabling legislation in 1976. The 'firsts' the system claims credit for include: first U.S. system to have a modern street operation application of the old "streetcar" technology; first U.S. rail operator to use the barrier-free, self-service fare collection system then commonly used only in Europe; first modern LRT system to recover majority of its operating costs from passenger fares; and first U.S. rail system to have a wheelchair-lift on every vehicle, providing 100 percent accessible service to riders who are disabled.
