This article discusses the infrastructure development of the motorway network in France's northern Alps. The Societe des Autoroutes Alpines (AREA) is building about 100km of motorway, the A49 from Grenoble to Valence and the A43 from Chambery to Alberville, and is doubling the size of the Epine Tunnel. The main reason for this construction program is the upcoming Winter Olympics of 1992 and its ensuing traffic volume.
