HEADING THROUGH TROUBLE UNDER THE PARK
Article describing excavation and construction of Spain's Sinesio twin-tube Tunnel, in the northwest area of Madrid. Though most of the excavation of the 10.5m-wide, 9.5m-high, D-shaped tunnels used methods associated with the NATM, the northernmost 128cm of each tunnel comprises a concrete tube or 'falso tunel', cast in situ within a cut-and-cover section. This is because of the soft nature of the ground and the shallow depth of cover. The rest of the article provides details of the excavation procedure, and ground treatment used.
