ROUNDABOUTS: A MOTIVATION FOR THEIR USE WITH ARCADY2 AS THE DESIGN TOOL
The roundabout has been the subject of limited research in South Africa and to date has received little serious attention as an alternative to existing traffic control methods. However, the research into program ARCADY2, permitting the analysis of the roundabout facility in comparable terms (namely capacity and delays) with other forms of intersection control, now provides a useful tool for the traffic engineer to assess the appropriateness of introducing such a facility to the road network. The roundabout is also particularly applicable in a rapidly developing community in terms of cost and safety advantages and further research is motivated to produce a non-computerized method of analysing potential roundabout sites.
