DESIGN AND SPECIFICATION OF CATHODIC PROTECTION FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES

The application of cathodic protection to reinforced concrete structures, particularly atmospherically exposed structures, such as bridges, car parks and buildings, requires a combination of design skills, these include: structural assessment; concrete repairs as well as cathodic protection design. Such a combination of skills is not normally required in either a typical cathodic protection project team or a typical concrete repair project team. The range of skills and information required for successful completion of a project is outlined here together with a brief appraisal of international Codes of Practice on the subject. The problem of design and performance criteria for cathodic protection for steel in reinforced concrete structures is also addressed. (Author/TRRL)
