THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSIFICATION OF TRAVEL-TO-WORK AREAS

National changes in employment are reflected in diverse experiences at the local level. To understand this diversity it is possible to examine the 322 Travel-To-Work Areas (TTWA) defined in 1984 on the basis of 1981 data for the whole of Britain. TTWAs form coherent local labour market areas and represent the maximum level of spatial disaggregation for which unemployment data are published. The aim of this research is to develop classifications of TTWAs thus making possible the identification of the main dimensions of change at the local scale. (TRRL)
