A $14.9 million reconstruction job on I-470 south of Topeka, Kansas, placed 4000 tons of cement-treated base (CTB) a day, more than double the rate of production if it had used asphalt. The 4.1 miles of I-470, reconstructed from March to late October 1990, represented the first use of open-graded CTB on a Kansas highway. This article provides details on the base construction and repaving operations.
