Several oil transportation projects are planned that will transform the flows of oil in Central Europe. These projects have potentially important implications for crude oil and product prices in the region. These projects are spurred by the desires of the newly opened economies of Central Europe to diversify their sources of oil supplies away from the U.S.S.R. The many pipeline projects being considered by these Central European countries are also likely to have an important secondary effect: creation of an integrated network for the whole of Europe and increased competition for crude and product supplies throughout.
