THE ELECTRONIC CHART - LEADING OR FOLLOWING VNIS TECHNOLOGY. IN: CONFERENCE RECORD OF PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE FIRST VEHICLE NAVIGATION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA - SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1989

The objective of this paper is to review progress in the field of Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) technology. The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS), which has the mandate to produce nautical charts for all of Canada's navigable waterways, has been encouraging developments in the ECDIS field in order to prepare itself for the era of the digital chart. Current federal legislation requires that all ships operating in Canadian waters carry up to date versions of the appropriate CHS chart.
