Advanced train control systems may come very slowly as actual train control is concerned. But railroads and suppliers are moving fast on advanced train communications. The technology has been developed and pilot programs are in place, with proven results. System-wide implementation will cost more money than any railroad is ready to commit; thus the new technology is being implemented on a building block basis, with actual "train control" probably coming last, after the use of data-link systems for work-order assignment and reporting, for the monitoring of locomotive conditions, and for the operation of maintenance-of-way equipment.
