CASE HISTORY OF LOS ANGELES-LONG BEACH HARBORS

The Los Angeles and Long Beach Port Authorities plan extensive expansion of their harbors and it is desired to insure that satisfactory mooring conditions will be obtained with respect to wave and current conditions and their effects on ship surge. Prototype wave data were acquired at 13 locations in the existing harbors over a 13-month period. Also, observations of ship movement were made and attempts are being made to correlate the wave and ship movement data. Tidal heights and velocities were obtained for verification of the model. A 1:100 vertical and 1:400 horizontal scale hydraulic model has been designed and constructed reproducing the harbors and an offshore area sufficient to allow propagation of required waves.
