CHARACTERIZATION OF ACOUSTIC EMISSION SIGNALS FROM MODE I CRACK

The dynamic mode I stress caused by a semi-infinite crack propagating with a prescribed velocity is determined, and then the displacements at any point are calculated. These time-dependent displacements are the analytical form of the acoustic emission waveforms. The first step of this analysis uses an influence function to foumulate an integral equation that expresses the boundary conditions in the plane of the crack. The steps for the calculation of the dynamic stresses are described. They include the determination of the influence function of the problem, which the dynamic displacement of an elastic half-space subjected to unit-concentrated impulse acting at the point of, and normal to, its edge; the formulation of the integral equation of the problem; and the solution of the integral equation.
