CAUSES OF FIRES IN SHIPS

For the purposes of this paper some 250 cases of major fires, in which The Salavage Association has been involved over the past decade have been reviewed. In order to give some idea of the extent of damage a financial evaluation of repair costs is given. It has not been possible to provide an indication of the total extent of losses to owners or their underwriters as the records examined only give repair costs and other incidental losses without taking account of loss of earnings which would generally be quite high, probably in the region of 25 percent.
