ACIDIFICATION POTENTIAL OF SNOWPACK IN SIERRA NEVADA

This is an attempt to provide a dynamic picture of how the snowpack accumulates and releases its anions throughout the winter season. A mathematical model was used to simulate the processes invovled and to generate the time history of snowpack depth and snowpack chemistry. The Easter Brook Lake in the Inyo National Park was studied, as well as Woods Lake watershed of Adirondacks, New York. The details of the study are decribed. It was found that the release rate of acid anions from the snowpack can serve as a measure of the potential to acidify the surface water during the spring melt period. These and other study findigns are discussed.
