PIPING/SAPPING EROSION I: BASIC CONSIDERATIONS

This paper attempts to help hydraulic engineers recognize and evaluate piping/sapping erosion. The significance of the phenomenon is discussed, and its formation of drainage patterns, geographic distribution, geologic distribution, removal of displaced soil, critical hydraulic gradient, and the difficulties in recognizing piping/sapping. The importance of the erosion mechanism is noted, as well as conditions necessary for piping/sapping.
