PROBABILISTIC APPROACH TO DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENTS OF TRIPOD PLATFORM

This is a study of differential settlements caused by inhomogeneities in the soil deformation properties. The study applied a probabilistic approach, and a tripod platform founded on a clay deposit was used as an example, because the differential settlements of such a platform type are easily found from the total settlements of its 3 individual platform footings. The probabilistic model study is detailed. The practical application of the model is illustrated by presentation of calculations for an example platform. Probability calculations are performed by a first order reliability method as well as by directional simulation. Results from the use of these 2 different methods are compared, and a sensitivity study is presented.
