UNDRAINED STABILITY OF SHALLOW SQUARE TUNNEL

The paper describes the application of two numerical techniques to yield sharp bounds on the load parameter for undrained collapse of a square tunnel. The numerical procedures are based on a finite element formulation of the plastic limit theorems and lead to large linear programming problems. For the range of shallow-tunnel geometries considered in the study, the bound solutions typically bracket the exact stability number to within 15% or better. The gap between the bounds may increase above 15% for cases where the stability number approaches zero. The details of the study are described.
