OUT OF THE LAB... AND INTO THE FIELD?

The article describes how engineers at an innovative research center are working on a variety of projects that will lead to new cement-based materials, and better ways to predict long-term performance. The Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials (ACBM) is a consortium of 5 institutions: University of Illinois; the University of Michigan; Purdue University; the National Institute of Standards and Technology; and Northwestern University. The properties and microstructure of cement materials are being studied, as well as ways to measure long-term durability and strength, fracture resistance of fibers, and sophisticated computer models to synthesize a currently scattered body of knowledge. Of the 25 projects in this $10 million effort, 5 are highlighted in the article.
