CURVES FOR THE ELASTIC ANALYSIS OF INITIALLY DEFORMED PLATES SUBJECT TO COMBINED UNIAXIAL COMPRESSION AND SHEAR

The design rules formulated by the Merrison Committee require that bridge structures be designed for specified imperfections in plate panels and their stiffening members. As an aid to design of plate panels results are given in this paper for maximum surface stress in initially deformed simply supported rectangular plates (side ratio 3:1), subjected to combined uniaxial compression and shear. These results were developed for the purpose of checking the webs of West Gate Bridge for compliance with the Merrison appraisal rules and are based on solutions obtained from a large deflection finite difference programme. They are presented in the form of load versus maximum surface stress for three compression to shear ratios. A method is given for the derivation of more general interaction curves for combined load to cause surface yield for various span to thickness ratios. Polynomial expressions were fitted to the results in order to facilitate their application in design. (A) /TRRL/
