There will be several major trends in highway and airport concrete pavement engineering and construction in the 1990s. Major 4R/Maintenance (restoration, resurfacing, recycling, reconstruction and maintenance) in the 1980s included concrete recycling, concrete pavement restoration, extensive subdrainage retrofitting, new repair materials, and extensive use of the Falling Weight Deflectometer for pavement evaluation and overlay design. It is noted that different geographic regions will show different trends in 4R/Maintenance strategies. Pavement evaluation will be much more important in the 1990s, and new materials, procedures, and equipment will be used. Research and development will produce many new materials for maintenance. These and other future trends are discussed.
