I-70 THROUGH GLENWOOD CANYON: "SHOWCASE" PUBLIC ARCHITECTURE FO THE 20TH CENTURY
The continuing work on Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon is described. It is claimed that the lanes now completed consitutue a civil engineering showcase. It took decades of environmental coordination, careful design, and special equipment (some borrowed from European countries) to reach the current level of achievement. Completion is scheduled for 1993, at a total estimated cost of $471 million. Separate landscaping projects will continue to revegetate the canyon with more than 150,000 individual trees and shrubs. The Glenwood Canyon's complex cosntruction is described in 4 sections: the roadway; viaducts and bridges; tunnels; and amenities such as rest areas. Each of these areas is described in some detail.
