MICROLEVEL STUDY OF INTEGRATION IN HIGH-STRENGTH CONCRETE INNOVATION

The development of high strength concretes are reviewed, and the paper describes the background of the Two Union Square project in Seattle, Washington, in which 19,000 psi concrete was successfully field placed in 10 ft diameter steel tubes to construct columns for a 58 story building. The paper describes the process of innovation in the project: the commitment of each party, interaction among parties, and the reconciliation of dissimilar goals and organizational cultures. The paper describes lessons extracted from the study, and gives recommendations for increasing the rate of innovation in construction.
