NAVIGATION AND DIGITAL MAPS INTERFACE FOR FLEET MANAGEMENT AND DRIVER INFORMATION SYSTEMS. IN: CONFERENCE RECORD OF PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE FIRST VEHICLE NAVIGATION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA - SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1989

At the heart of current concepts for fleet management and driver information lie navigation and digital map technologies. Navigation provides vehicle position information and maps provide, at a minimum, a convenient reference domain to display position, destination, route and auxillary information. Companies developing navigation and map technologies are faced with the problem of providing products that can be utilized in the wide range of emerging market applications. This paper explores one company's approach in developing products with layered interfaces to meet this challenge. The paper will emphasize command layer intefaces. Examples will be given of fleet management and driver guidance systems utilizing such interfaces.
