IS CONTROL OF THE COMPACTION OF A LEAN CONCRETE ROAD BASE SUFFICIENT TO FORECAST ITS PROPENSITY TO CRACKING ?

Observations have led one to suppose that only the state of compaction of lean concrete influenced the cracking of the material used in road bases. However the average dry bulk density of core samples, taken from cracked and non-cracked zones, did not show an appreciable difference (1.94 and 1. 91 kg/dm cubed), although the difference is statistically significant; furthermore the compressive strength of each core sample seems to statistically increase with the dry bulk density of the latter according to a linear relation. since no control had been conducted of in-situ laying conditions, tests were carried out on a construction site during which compaction process variables for lean concrete applied with a finisher were varied. The state of compaction of the road base varied in consequence from 70 to 83%, and, after 28 days, observations showed that no no cracks had developed in the experimental section, thus appearing to confirm the original assumption. It seems that further controls should be made of not only the state of compaction but also the mix design, the moisture content of the mixture at the time of compaction, the quantity of cement, weather conditions during making, and friction between the road base and its support. /TRRL/
