A SUBWAY FOR SEATTLE: DUAL-MODE IN THE PACIFIC NORTWEST

The opening of Seattle's new 1.3 mile long transit tunnel is discussed. Initial scheduled service includes two north side and two south side routes, supplemented as needed by shuttle buses circulating between the north and south portal stations. Within the tunnel all buses operate as trolley coaches, propelled by an electric motor, while beyond the tunnel they operate from diesel power. Ultimately, about 25% of all rush hour trips through downtown will be routed via the tunnel.
