A TUNNEL TECHNIQUE REDISCOVERED

Excavating underground openings in cohesive and non-cohesive soils and soft to medium hard rock is often complicated by excessive overbreak or cave-ins, a problem which mechanical pre-cutting can help overcome. The technique can improve the quality and safety of tunnelling as well as reduce surface settlements, noise and vibration. It is therefore likely to be used increasingly in situations where environmental concern is a major consideration, or where inadequate overburden makes conventional tunnelling too risky.
