This article reviews developments in site investigation practice in soft ground in relation to some problems that occur when attempting to obtain quality samples. It describes refinements to traditional boring and sampling methods that are aimed at improving matters. However, most research and development efforts center on the promotion of in-situ test methods as a means of improving soft ground profiling and to facilitate the rapid determination of their parameters.
