TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT. RTS ENGLISH ISSUE NUMBER 6. A REAL TIME IMAGE PROCESSOR FOR MEASURING ROAD TRAFFIC

This article describes a real time image processor which could be used for traffic control measurements. The system is based on the principles of mathematical morphology and parallel architecture. The synchronous processing unit is able to process 1, 2 or 4 pixels at a time. The binary processor is organized in a pipeline architecture of 7 processors. The first carries out boolean operations while the others work on neighborhood transformations. The gray level processor is organized in 4 parallel units. The recursive processor can carry out special operations such as labeling and reconstruction. Locally, these transformation only take the neighborhood points which have been already processed. The authors used a programmable gate array to build the main part of the prototype.
