AN INTERCITY OF MODEL OF MODAL SPLIT CONSIDERING FOUR MODES
This study examines four modes for intercity travel: bus, private automobile, commercial airlines, and conventional rail service. The models developed suggest that decisions should be viewed as being sequential (versus simultaneous) and largely based on the perceptions of the travel services provided. Traveller characteristics (including trip purpose) may be collectively more important than characteristics of modes. In essence, regarding high-speed rail's ability to compete with other modes of travel, this study suggests that it will not.
