CRACKING AND FAILURE ANALYSIS OF MASONRY ARCH BRIDGES

In this study, a finite element-based analytical approach is proposed for the incremental loading analysis of masonry arches up to the collapse load. The proposed approach employs a 2-dimensional finite element model to account for both the vertical and horizontal restraining effects of the spandrel fill on the structural behavior of masonry arch bridges. The mathematical modeling of the stress-strain relationships of masory as a material and the failure criteria adopted are described in some detail. The proposed procedure incorporates a stress-redistribution scheme that allows the spreading of the cracked and/or crushed zones in the structure to be determined numerically.
