ALTERNATE METHODS FOR THE DIRECT MEASUREMENT OF ASPHALT CEMENT CONTENT

Minnesota Department of Transportation's use of the Spot Check method for determination of asphalt cement content in hot mix asphalt mixtures, and its use of the maximum specific gravity data acquired from quality control testing to monitor the AC content, are described. The spot check procedure provides a periodic check for HMA facilities that proportion the AC by volume. In this procedure, the percent of AC in the mixture is determined by measuring the quantitites of the AC used and the HMA produced in a given interval of time. Details of the procedure are described, as well as the specific gravity method.
