This article describes several spraying equipment products recently launched by bitumen handling specialists Cartem Ltd. The surface dressing of motorways and trunk roads seems likely to be adopted increasingly. Therefore, spraying equipment must be built for maximum efficiency, accuracy of cover and speed, in addition to reliability, durability and ease of maintenance. In Europe and the UK, there is keen competition to cut costs without diminishing standards of performance. Cartem's new Eurobar double expanding spray-bar has the important advantage of greatly increasing efficiency by reducing the number of passes needed to cover the whole road surface. It has been used on several British contracts during 1990 and is a proven alternative to the more complex and expensive European systems. It can handle most surface dressing binders in general use. Another similar but less sophisticated new spray bar is the Expandbar, that expands hydraulically but on one side only. Cartem is also making special spray-bars, which can be designed to meet the specific preference of individual users, and vehicles for carrying bitumen and binders. Equipment built by Cartem is exported to highway projects in many parts of the world. (TRRL)
