GROUP REPORT ON AN ASPHALT STUDY TOUR OF THE USA: JANUARY - FEBRUARY 1990

The Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) organised a Study Tour to the USA in January-February 1990, the main purposes of which were to attend the First International Conference of the International Society of Asphalt Pavements (ISAP), and to study developments in several of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) contracts, especially those related to asphalt and bitumen and the long term pavement performance (LTPP) study. The major findings can be summarised as follows. Group participation in study tours encourages communication within the group and enhances the quality of the technology transfer with the staff of the organisation visited. The co-operative nature of current asphalt research in Australia should be continued and, if possible, expanded. An industry-wide group should be set up to examine the applicability of, and the economic viability of the implementation of, the SHRP bitumen and asphalt research and to be responsible for setting up "round robin" testing to characterise bitumens and asphalts used in Australia in terms of those investigated during SHRP. There is a need to increase training and education across the asphalt industry and to create a technical/specialist career/pay structure parallel to, and as rewarding as, the management structure, and answerable to it. The LTPP study should continue to be supported. (Author/TRRL)
