WIRE FIBER REINFORCED CONCRETE OVERLAYS FOR ORTHOTROPIC BRIDGE DECK LOADING

The desirable fatigue and toughness properties of concrete reinforced with short lengths of fine wire are investigated with respect to its use in composite with orthotropic steel bridge decks. While conventionally reinforced portland cement concrete cannot economically satisfy the design criteria for orthotropic bridge decks, experimental results, using carefully designed laboratory specimens, indicate that fiber reinforced concrete does have the necessary characteristics to perform as a viable orthotropic bridge deck wearing surface. Furthermore, the fiber concrete surfacing system is shown to also act as a load bearing and stiffening element in composite with orthotropic steel bridge decks, and with floor grating systems.
