As part of a programme of cooperation between the Ground Engineering Division of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) and the Soils Division of the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussees (LCPC), TRRL is publishing edited translations of several papers on soil nailing. This report is an edited translation of the first of these papers (see IRRD 119393). This report gives examples of studies that, over the years have enabled the LCPC to acquire a wider experience and propose a design methodology (see IRRD 815371). The nailing of unstable slopes is mainly used in cases where traditional earthworks or drainage methods require large-scale operations or impose constraints unacceptable for existing structures. Examples of embankments and cuttings illustrate, in particular, the possibility of working within the width of existing rights-of-way without disturbing initial stability conditions. Two studies of unstable slopes are presented in this report. (TRRL)
