PLANNING THE HIGHWAY AXIS LINE BY THE USE OF CUBIC SPLINES FUNCTIONS

LA PROGETTAZIONE DELLA LINEA D'ASSE STRADALE CON L'USO DELLE FUNZIONI SPLINES CUBICHE

In the planning of road axis alignment it has for some time been suggested to adopt, in place of the traditional sequence of planimetric elements, a continuous curve which satisfies all the necessary conditions for driving safety and comfort. In particular, the use has been proposed of interpolating functions called "splines", which possess characteristics well suited to the requirements of highway planning. This article develops an analytical process aimed at determining the axis line equation and verifying the geometric and dynamic characteristics in relation to the exigencies of locomotion. (TRRL)
