STUDY DAY ON ROUNDABOUTS IN SUBURBAN HIGHWAYS

JORNADA TECNICA SOBRE GLORIETAS EN CARRETERAS

As an example of the increasing use of roundabouts on suburban highways, this article discusses their application as an intersection solution for the road infrastructure of west metropolitan Madrid. The roundabouts have proven more advantageous than conventional intersections for the following reasons: greater fluidity of traffic; lower accident indices; better land use and the opportunity to use the central island for aesthetic treatment. Constructed at distances between 500 and 1300 m, they serve to limit flow speeds and facilitate the coexistence of variable intensities and compositions of traffic. (TRRL)
