PROSPECTS FOR POLYMER GRAVEL ASPHALTIC CONCRETE

KUNSTGRINDASFALTBETON BIEDT PERSPECTIEVEN

Research into the feasibility of processing whirling bed fly ash into polymer gravel is undertaken. Polymer gravel made up of a mixture of whirling bed fly ash and powdered coal fly ash, produced by the Aardelite-process, has good qualities such as strength. It is also much lighter than gravel. A Marshall test shows that it has the following properties: high stability; good durability against moisture and frost as a result of the porosity; and good creep-, wheel track- and fatigue characteristics. The fatique life does not come up to the quality standard for gravel asphaltic concrete (traffic-class 3). Research has also been undertaken into the leach out of heavy metals. The conclusion of this brief investigation is that polymer gravel can be used as an environmentally innocuous aggregate comparable to gravel asphaltic concrete. (TRRL)
