A DATA BANK FOR ENHANCED SAFETY

In an effort to develop a comprehensive automated system capable of storing, retrieving and correlating the volumes of data which relate to the city transportation system and traffic movement upon that system, a 3-phase program has been initiated. Phase I includes data inventory and needs analysis, basic system design and implementaitn of a prototype accident records system. Phase II involves development and implementation of a complete accident records processing system. Phase III will convert all additional traffic data bases (such as volume, signal, sign and control device data) into an automated form, and develop the necessary additional computer programs. The objectives of Phase I were to establish system configuration, develop a system implementation plan, implement and operate a prototype accident records system and establish an operational photologging system. In Phase II an automated system, the Seattle Accident Filing and Traffic Information System (SAFTI) will perform data preparation, data management and data output. A series of software modules will accomplish these functions: the driver report matching module; the accident record matching module; and the data storage, retrieval and analysis module. The latter also includes the collision diagram and the geographic base file.
