It is noted that most suspension failures can be prevented by knowing how and why they happen. U-bolt failures are discussed as well as fatigue failures. U-bolt is the most important factor in spring suspension maintenance. Imperfections that can act as initiation sites for fatigue cracks are noted. Spring replacement is described. Lubrication of suspension is important, and if not adequate, could lead to failures. Shocks and air bags are discussesd, and it is noted, that an active shock absorber maintenance program wil help increase the longevity of springs, bushings and other suspension hardware.
