The mathematical formulations and a methodology for analyzing the response of nonuniform piles to vertical vibrations are presented. The inherent assumptions, similar to other mathematical models, are that the soil is a semi-infinite, homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic medium and the pile is circular and elastic. The methodology involves numerical integration of the governing field equation using a novel 2-step iteration scheme. The effort involved in implementing the proposed technique into a computer program are minimal and the analysis can be efficiently performed on conventional microcomputers. The model is verified for the case of uniform piles and then applied to study the reponse of tapered piles and 2-component piles subject to vertical vibrations.
