PREDICTION OF SIZE-DEPENDENT MAXIMUM LOADS OF CONCRETE BEAMS

The paper presents a simple analytical model that is capable of predicting the size-dependent maximum load of a concrete beam under 3-point loading conditions. The model is based on Hilerborg's fictitious crack model, with some simplifying assumptions concerning the crack-opening profile, the distribution of tractions in the cohesive zone, and the stress regime in the beam ligament. The errors introduced by the simplifying assumptions are critically examined and the predictive capability of the model is validated via comparisons with experimental data and boundary element computational results. It is pointed out that one of the limitations of the model is that it can only be appllied to initially unnotched beams.
