GEODETIC COORDINATE SYSTEMS IN FLORIDA: GPS CONTRIBUTION

The Global Positioning System project, Florida High Precision Network was planned with the intention of establishing throughout Florida, an ultraprecise framework of GPS-determined points, to which some marks of the existing horizontal (North American Datum (NAD) 83 (1986) and vertical (National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD)) are connected. The project's objective was to implement a statewide network of stations positioned relative to one another with a horizontal relative accuracy of 1;1,000,000 or better. This paper discusses the project, the data collection and processing, comparisons of NAD 83 (1986) in Florida with GPS and VLBI (very long baseline interferometry), and comparisons of orthometric heights derived from GPS and Global Geoidal Model with NGVD 29.
