CRITICAL FILTERS FOR IMPERVIOUS SOILS. DISCUSSION
This is a discussion of a paper of the above title by J.L. Sherard and L.P. Dunnigan, published in Vol 115 No.7 (January 1989) issue of this journal. Discussers Lafleur and Mlynarek comment on the authors proposal that the so-called no-erosion filter test is the best available test for evaluating the critical filter size D sub 15B. Comments are also made regarding the test program, and the lack of support of factual data for many conclusions. Discusser Lopes adds some theoretical comments on the subject. Discusser Zhu expresses his opinion regarding the author's criteria for filters for various soil groups. Comments are also made on the concept that base soil shearing strength plays an important role in the behavior of the NEF test.
