ASSESSMENT OF THE QUALITY OF THE BITUMINOUS MIXTURE ON THE BASIS OF CORES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACING

BEDOEMNING AV ASFALTSMASSANS KVALITET PAA BASIS AV BORRKAERNOR

The report examines variations in mix composition during production, and assessment of quality by taking cores. Data have been collected from 18 surfacing projects in 1984. At least 6 and usually 15 cores were taken from each project. In only 7 of the 18 was there a close relationship between binder content and grading curve, indicating that segregation was the dominant cause of scatter in binder content. Of these 7 projects 4 used a type of mix in which segregation can be expected to be greatest. Although theoretically binder content of core and mix is the same, there is a reduction in the core, amounting to about 0.1% by weight. The grading curve is also affected when core is taken, chiefly at coarsest fractions. Due to segregation effects, precision of mix composition as laid is different from the ex-plant precision. By assuming that deviations in the cores are due only to segregation, a standard deviation can be calculated for the corrected binder content; this is a good measure of plant precision. By comparing this parameter with standard deviation of binder content in the cores, it can be seen whether variation on site is due to segregation or bad plant precision. (TRRL)
