INTRODUCTION: SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS OPTIMIZATION. PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM: ROAD DESIGN AND SAFETY, LUXEMBORG, JUNE 1989

Troad surface characteristics were the subject of requirements and specifications intended to ensure firstly the safety of road users and secondly their comfort. at present road traffic is constantly increasing and has an increasing and considerable impact on the environment and the economy. recent awareness - among the authorities and the public, road users and frontagers - of the influence of surface characteristics in those areas, and, additionally, increasing demands of road users for comfort have increased performance requirements for road pavements. this has resulted in conflicts between apparently contradictory requirements. this article reviews the various performance requirements for road pavements as well as the surface characteristics which determine performance, and shows that it is possible, in principle, to optimize them without compromise.
